Some of the reasons I love living where I do are:
1. I can still get roses 🌹 in mid-December. They may not be as pretty as my spring roses, but they add beauty to my home. I never thought I’d be able to grow roses. I was told that they are finicky and need a lot of care. Honestly? I just let them do their thing. I prune them and cut back the dead growth, but that’s about it. They are in a part of the yard that gets tons of sun, so they must like where they are living.
2. I can grow lemons, no problem! My lemons are ripe and ready for picking. A few years ago I bought a miniature Meyer Lemon tree. Each year it seems to produce more and more lemons. It’s very close to the ground which makes it easy for me to harvest the lemony goodness (l’m vertically challenged you see😉). I love to add lemon 🍋 slices to my water. It’s so refreshing.
3. I can still grow veggies! I’ve experimented over the years and I have found that carrots and broccoli seem to grow best for me during the Fall and Winter seasons. I also seem to have luck with potatoes, but I didn’t plant any this season. I love to grow herbs as well. Oregano, thyme, sage, and dill are in full swing. I’ll cut them back, probably in January to allow for new Spring growth.
4. The outdoors! Because of the mild climate in the Bay Area it allows me to hike/walk all winter. I live in the foothills of Mt. Diablo and can reach the trails in about a 5 minute walk from my house. I am truly grateful to live in this majestic area.
